Restoring Connections and Landscapes – Symposium of Ecological Restoration brings together specialists in Rio de Janeiro

“The 1st Symposium of Ecological Restoration of the State of Rio de Janeiro took place on August 2nd to 4th. Themed “”Restoring Connections and Landscapes””, the event brought together 250 participants from 70 institutions that discussed the challenges and opportunities of restoration in the state. The objective of the symposium was to promote the exchange of information among different sectors that have been involved with the recovery of degraded areas, rehabilitation, reforestation and ecological restoration. In the first two days, the debates focused on “Seed market and seedlings”; “Communicating and raising awareness”, “Financial instruments for forest restoration” and “Planning and monitoring of restoration areas”. On the last day, technical visits were made to areas in which restoration projects are taking place in the city – such as the Sugar Loaf slope and an experimental agroforest area located in Fundão Island. The event was hosted by Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro  (PUC-RJ) in partnership with IIS, the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro and Veiga de Almeida University (UVA), supported by the Rio de Janeiro State Environmental Institute (INEA), the Rio de Janeiro City Hall and the Brazilian Society for Ecological Restoration (SOBRE).”
