IIS Researcher Featured in Jornal Nacional on the Impact of Climate Change

Stella Manes, a researcher at IIS, was interviewed for the April 15 edition of Jornal Nacional on TV Globo. The news report focused on the study “Climate Change and Biodiversity in Brazil: What We Know, What We Don’t Know, and the Risk Reduction Potential of the Paris Agreement,” co-authored by Manes.

The study mapped more than 7,500 animal and plant species in Brazil. According to the research, 90% of these species will suffer negative impacts due to the climate crisis, and about 25% could disappear. To reverse this scenario and preserve biodiversity, the researcher highlights the importance of reducing fossil fuel emissions and deforestation:

This would prevent half of the species currently at risk of extinction from being at risk anymore. In addition, we can adopt other strategies focused on the adaptation of these species. For example: restoring degraded areas, replanting forests that were lost, in order to expand the habitats of these species,” she explains.

The study also outlines ways to reduce the risk of destruction of our fauna and flora. One of them is to prevent global temperatures from rising more than 2°C, the limit set by the Paris Agreement.

Stella Manes holds a degree in biology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), with a PhD in ecology from the same institution, and works with a focus on proposing and implementing solutions to environmental impacts.
