Biodiversity and Ecosystems’ Economy Study (TEEB) – Paraíba do Sul River Basin – Paulista Portion / São Paulo

São Paulo’s TEEB is part of the global initiative “TEEB – The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity”, which aims to highlight the economic benefits of biodiversity, as well as the increasing costs of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. TEEB presents an approach that helps decision makers of several areas to recognize, demonstrate and capture the value of ecosystem services and biodiversity.

São Paulo’s TEEB wishes to contribute to a more coherent and efficient management of natural resources of the Paraíba do Sul River Basin – Paulista portion and, at same time, promote a local and sustainable development in the Basin, ending the region’s degradation cycle. It is in this part of the Basin that the higher percentage of Atlantic Forest remaining vegetation and Conservation Units (CU) are concentrated.

The focus of the consulting services conducted by IIS in partnership with GAEA was in the conservation of the region’s biodiversity and ecosystem services, also emphasizing the transition to a green economy in the State of São Paulo. Furthermore, it sought to offer subsidies for the elaboration and implementation of policies directed towards the improvement of management, use and conservation of the State’s natural resources.

The study carried out by IIS generated 4 products: I) Consolidated Report Product I (compilation of 4 by-products); II) Use and land use scenarios of the Paraíba do Sul River Basin – Paulista Portion/SP; III) Socioeconomical and environmental valuation of the Paraíba do Sul River Basin – Paulista Portion/SP’s ecosystem services; and IV) Recommendation of policies for ecosystem services’ preservation, income generation and change of scenarios in the  Paraíba do Sul River Basin – Paulista Portion/SP.

Information and documents for each product can be found on IIS’s website under “Publications”.
