The National Plan for Native Vegetation Recovery (PLANAVEG), of which IIS was one of the idealizers, became the federal decree “National Policy for Native Vegetation Recovery (PROVEG)”

With great satisfaction IIS reports that the National Plan for Native Vegetation Recovery (PLANAVEG), in wich elaboration the institute has directly participated together with other Institutions, Universities and NGOs that supports the Ministry of the Environment in Brazil, became the federal decree “National Policy for Native Vegetation Recovery (PROVEG)” on January 27, 2017

The National Plan for native vegetation recovery (PLANAVEG) began to be idealized on September 24, 2013 at the event “Opportunities and challenges for the construction of a national forest restoration strategy”, organized by the World Resources Institute (WRI). International Union for Nature Conservation (IUCN) and the International Institute for Sustainability (IIS). The event happened at IIS head office.

During the meeting, several large-scale restoration experiences around the world were presented, as well as some of the forest restoration initiatives that WRI and IUCN were engaged in. WRI also presented the preliminary results of the diagnosis of the main obstacles to a national strategy, based on data from diverse experiences and from the participation of numerous actors engaged in forest restoration in Brazil

The workshop enabled experience exchange, and participants could draw opportunities and think about challenges for the consolidation of a national strategy for native vegetation recovery, in addition to calibrating the results of the presented diagnosis.

On March 19, 2014, IIS, IUCN and WRI met again and organized a work day to support the development of a possible national policy to support the recovery of native vegetation. This meeting, which also took place at IIS head office, had three main focuses:

1) Suggest recovery goals, in area;

2) Estimate the strategies costs of this policy, and the recovery goals suggested in item 1;

3) Present inputs and suggestions for the further development of the recovery spatial prioritization.

On January 23, 2017, the National Plan for Native Vegetation Recovery (PLANAVEG) became a Federal Decree No. 8,972 entitled “National Policy for Native Vegetation Recovery (PROVEG).” This policy aims to articulate, integrate and promote policies, programs and actions that encourage forests recovery and other native vegetation forms on at least 12 million hectares in Brazil.
