IIS holds workshop to discuss issues related to Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) in Brazil
The IIS organised a workshop, the under the leadership of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA), to discuss issues related to Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) in Brazil. ANR is an approach that seeks to accelerate and facilitate natural regeneration processes through planned interventions, with significant potential to promote the return of biodiversity in areas undergoing recovery.
The aim of the meeting was to bring together key stakeholders to support the development of a resolution that will establish the definition of ANR in the country, the principles required for its implementation, forms of monitoring, and strategies for the technique to be adopted with appropriate guidance and legal certainty.
The event was attended by representatives from government, academia, biome networks, the Brazilian Society for Ecological Restoration (SOBRE), and the private sector. The Observatory of Restoration and Reforestation (ORR) also took part, as did the project’s current collaborators, Robin Chazdon and La Clima.
The IIS plays a direct role in expanding knowledge on this strategy in Brazil through the project “Facilitating the expansion of Assisted Natural Regeneration in Brazilian ecosystems”, funded by the Bezos Earth Fund. The IIS has been developing maps, protocols, guidelines and methodologies to guide the prioritisation and monitoring of ANR. With these tools, the institute seeks to support decision-makers and contribute to the advancement of native vegetation recovery on a national scale.
