Economic and financial analysis of the investment opportunities in the state of Mato Grosso arising from the PCI Strategy

IIS partners in a study developed to determine the investment needs of the “PCI Strategy: Produce, Preserve and Include”, aimed to promote socioeconomic development in Mato Grosso state through the sustainable land use.

According to the Strategy, the goals are based in 3 objectives:

  • Produce: all future agricultural production can be accommodated within the existing productive area through sustainable intensification and the adoption of good agricultural practices.
  • Conserve: restoration of native vegetation areas in accordance with legal requirements and conservation of the remaining forests areas.
  • Include: well-being improvements and prosperity for family farming, indigenous peoples, and traditional communities.

To meet these goals by 2030, the study will define ways to capture investments, indicating priorities and the necessary investment models. This analysis includes: i) investment surveys related to the PCI Strategy in the period 2016-2020; ii) review of 2015 estimates; iii) adjustment of estimates to achieve these goals by 2030; iv) analysis of multiple criteria for prioritizing investments; and v) design six investment models for raising funds to finance PCI priority goals.

Ultimately, the results will reflect: reduction of 6 gigatonnes of CO₂ emissions; environmental regularization, thus complying with the Forest Code in 100% of rural properties in the State; increasing of R$ 5 billion in the agricultural GDP; socio-productive inclusion of 100,000 family farmers.

The Policy brief “Economic and Financial Analysis and Investment Opportunities in the State of Mato Grosso arising from the PCI Strategy” summarizes the main findings, conclusions and recommendations of the study for decision makers. The document was led by IIS and presented at COP 26.
