Clarice Mendes

Data Science Analyst

Clarice holds a degree in Biology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and a Master’s and PhD in Ecology and Evolution from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Her research focuses on the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on biodiversity and climate, using databases and satellite imagery. She has extensive international experience, having developed species distribution scenarios in simulated landscapes during her sandwich PhD at the University of Vermont (UVM), under the supervision of Professor Nicholas Gotelli.

After completing her doctorate, she worked on projects with Vale S.A., the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat for Environment and Climate, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). From assessing the risk of contamination by mining waste in the Rio Doce basin to quantifying ecosystem services provided by Rio de Janeiro’s urban forests, Clarice has consistently sought to support stakeholders in data-driven decision-making. At IIS, she provides technical support in the processing of geospatial data and in spatial prioritisation analyses aimed at nature conservation and restoration, using the R programming language.
