Amazon Experts Validate Priority Areas for Biome Restoration in IIS Project

The IIS, in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS), held two virtual workshops in 2025 (on 8 April and 5 August) to discuss, refine, and validate prioritisation scenarios for the restoration of native vegetation in the Amazon. These activities are part of the project “Priority Areas for the Restoration of Native Vegetation in Brazil,” which supports the update of Planaveg and other public policies.

The workshops brought together over 40 participants from various institutions active in the region. Preliminary results were presented, discussed, and consolidated based on the participants’ contributions, with a focus on technical criteria, data sources, and local knowledge of the territory.

Six prioritisation scenarios were analysed, taking into account: biodiversity conservation; water resource conservation; climate change mitigation and adaptation; socio-economic returns; and restoration costs. The participants’ feedback guided methodological refinements and improvements.

As the next step, the results will be submitted for validation and approval by Conaveg, prior to formal adoption by the federal government. The project will then continue with the identification of priority restoration areas in other Brazilian biomes.
