IIS at the 21st World Congress of Soil Science

IIS was represented at the 21st World Congress of Soil Science, held in Rio de Janeiro from 12 to 17 August. According to the organizers, the theme of the congress – “Soil Science: besides food and fuel – is an invitation to answer questions such as: How to feed a hungry planet? How to fuel an energy-hungry planet? How to quench a thirsty planet? How to clean up our polluted planet? “, among many other issues related to the main soil ecossystem services. Two IIS researchers were invited to present at the event. Katarzyna Korys, specialist in soil chemistry and degraded soil recovery lectured on “Valuation of ecosystem services of the soil under different models of tropical hotspot restoration” and integrated the session on systems of ecological management and soil quality. The researcher Aline Rodrigues presented the work entitled “The effect of biochar in Atlantic Forest seedlings: environmental and social analysis”, in which she discussed alternatives for the substrate composition of native seedlings of the Atlantic forest, identifying benefits and problems associated with seedling production in family nurseries in the region of the Costa do Sol in Rio de Janeiro, with more than 5,000 people from different nationalities participating in the program.
