IIS Participates in Panel on Biodiversity Monitoring and Financing
IIS participated in the event “Carbon and Biodiversity: Integrating Markets, Conservation, and Development,” held during SP Climate Week 2026. Representing IIS, Bruna Pavani, Institutional Engagement Lead, joined the panel “Experiences in Biodiversity Monitoring and Support,” organized by ECCON Soluções Ambientais, alongside representatives from Petrobras, Natura, and Fundação Florestal.
The panel addressed progress and challenges in integrating science, monitoring, financing, and decision-making for biodiversity. During her presentation, Bruna emphasized that one of the main challenges in this field is not simply generating more data, but transforming it into actionable information that can guide strategic decisions by businesses and governments.
“There is still a gap between scientific research and its application in decision-making. Bridging this gap requires bringing researchers and decision-makers closer together, understanding which questions need to be answered, and transforming vast amounts of ecological data into reliable and comparable indicators.”
Another central topic was the complexity of measuring biodiversity. Unlike carbon, biodiversity cannot be represented by a single indicator. Instead, it requires multidimensional approaches that capture the diversity of species, habitats, ecological processes, and the benefits provided by ecosystems.
“The value lies not in any single metric or technology, but in integrating different indicators to reduce uncertainty and support better decisions. Monitoring creates value when it can answer the questions that truly matter.”
Participants also emphasized that strengthening biodiversity financing mechanisms depends on increasingly robust and transparent monitoring systems capable of consistently demonstrating impacts and outcomes.
IIS’s participation in SP Climate Week reinforces its commitment to integrating the biodiversity and climate agendas, contributing to the development of science-based solutions that support public policies, private investment, and financing mechanisms aimed at biodiversity conservation, restoration, and sustainable use.
