Roadmap for the Development of the Agro-Environmental Agenda of Tocantins
The International Institute for Sustainability (IIS) developed the “Roadmap for the Development of the Agro-Environmental Agenda of Tocantins” with the aim of guiding actions to integrate agricultural production and environmental conservation in the state. The report identifies opportunities and bottlenecks, providing recommendations to strengthen the sustainability of production chains and promote the environmental regularization of rural properties.
The document proposes practical guidelines along two main axes: (i) sustainability and agricultural production chains, including technical assistance, traceability, and payments for environmental services; and (ii) environmental regularization, focusing on instruments such as the Ecological-Economic Zoning (ZEE), the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), (iii) combating illegal deforestation, among others.
The report also recommends actions to expand the use of sustainable technologies, create economic incentives, and strengthen environmental governance. The guidelines aim to align Tocantins with international market requirements and contribute to achieving the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
The work was carried out through a participatory process led by IIS, with interviews and a workshop involving representatives from the public and private sectors, academia, civil society organizations, and NGOs.
The project partners were the Tocantins State Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SEAGRO-TO) and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), with additional support from The Nature Conservancy (TNC).
